10 Questions With Matt Kvesic

We Speak to England and Exeter Openside Flanker Matt Kvesic About All Things Rugby and Training!

What’s your favourite part of S&C training for rugby?

I really enjoy the speed aspect of training. The drills are good fun & I find it quite challenging. Always enjoy seeing how fast I can go & if I’m anywhere near the backs!!

What’s your best experience in rugby?

Can’t look past my first cap for England. That’s something I’ll cherish for a long time. Also the JWC in 2011. Great tournament with a top group of lads.

What’s the hardest training session you’ve ever done?

Done some horrible MAS sessions, made even harder at altitude in Denver in the World Cup camp. Sand dunes at Worcester were always pretty tough too!

Which opposition player do you respect the most for their fitness/physicality?

Tough question. The likes of Vunipola brother are impressive. Those are big lads but light on their feet & physical with it. Rugby most be easy if your that big!

Where do you think amateur players get it wrong when it comes to S&C for rugby?

I think there’s probably a big focus on weights & getting bigger. Less on the aerobic & anaerobic side of conditioning. Rugby is becoming an increasing high tempo game. We’re lucky that most of our programs are individualized.

What part of S&C training do you like the least?

Not sure many people enjoy the straight line running. The “mindless” type of running. Most people would prefer con games or something that involves a difference stimulus!

Who is the fittest player in your squad?

We’ve got a lot of fit people, Billy Twelvetrees, Charlie Sharples but I would say that Jacob Rowan is the fittest. Certainly tops the charts  in the stats!

Who is the strongest player in your squad?

If he tried… it would be big Sione Kalamafoni! There’s a few strong young lads like Charlie Beckett. He can lift.

What’s your favourite exercise in the gym?

I quite enjoy a squat. Proper arse to grass squat though!!

What music do you like to listen to while training?

I’m really enjoy Kanye West, mostly his old music, but otherwise anything new in the charts.

Thanks Matt, enjoy the next few months of training and good luck for the season ahead with Exeter! RR
